Mosquito Net FAQ
Last reviewed: August 2026
Welcome to our FAQ page, where we answer the questions customers ask us most. We have been designing, making and supplying mosquito nets from Australia since 1995, so if you can't find your answer below, contact us — provide as much information as possible, and sometimes images are better than words!
Choosing the right net
Do mosquito nets actually work?
Yes. A mosquito net is a physical barrier, and when it is correctly sized for your bed, properly hung and sealed — with the netting falling closed and draping to the floor so there are no gaps — it provides complete protection from mosquitoes. That is exactly what our nets are designed to do, and it is why they are generously sized, fully hemmed and finished with overlapping openings.
Which shape should I choose — box, round, temple or freestanding?
Box nets have a structured rectangular shape that creates a four poster bed canopy effect. They hang from four to six ceiling points, or attach to a poster bed, and have four openings with a generous overlap. Box mosquito nets
Round nets hang from a single ceiling point for a romantic princess canopy effect, and are simple to install — one hook in the ceiling. Round mosquito nets
Temple canopies blend the box and round styles, with three openings and a fold-away frame, so one canopy fits over almost any bed from cots to kings.
Freestanding pop-up nets are self-supporting and need no ceiling installation at all, which makes them ideal for renters, apartments and travel. Freestanding mosquito nets
Cotton mosquito net questions
What are the cotton nets made of?
Natural cotton. We start by buying cotton thread, then weave the netting and fabric before sewing the nets together. All cotton nets are made from pre-washed cotton netting with a run-proof weave, and hemmed with a cotton fabric. The run-proof weave gives the netting its slightly chequered appearance.
Why does the cotton netting have a chequered pattern, and can I get it without?
The chequered pattern is created by our run-proof weave — it is a feature of the quality manufacturing process, not a flaw, and it is what stops the netting laddering or running if it is ever snagged. Because it is woven in, the cotton netting is not available without it.
Do the cotton nets come in different colours, and can I dye them?
We supply natural white only, as colour preferences vary. The cotton canopies dye easily, and the simplest, most effective product we have found is washing machine dye. Use warm water only — slight shrinkage of around 5% may occur if very hot water is used.
Do cotton nets help with midges and sandflies?
Many of our cotton customers tell us they notice a real difference with midges and sandflies, which we put down to the fibrous hairs on natural cotton thread. This is based on our thirty years of experience and customer feedback rather than laboratory testing — but it is one of the most common reasons customers in coastal and tropical areas choose cotton.
Box nets, frames and hanging
Will a box mosquito net fit my four poster bed?
Yes, in most situations. Measure the top frame of your poster bed, then select the size you need — if there is not an exact match, choose the next size up, as excess fabric can be gathered into the corners. The canopy can be attached in several ways depending on the type of four poster bed, and instructions are provided with every box mosquito net.

Do I have to use a frame with a box net?
No. The versatile design of our box canopies means you can simply suspend the canopy from ceiling hooks. That said, a frame — bamboo, steel or timber — adds to the presentation and visual impact of the display. All round and single-point nets come with a frame and only need one hook in the ceiling.
Do you supply hooks and hanging kits?
Yes — hanging kits are available on our Hooks and Frames page. Box nets come with instructions; most other nets are self-explanatory. If you need more help, contact us.
Do you supply bamboo frames, and what poles do I need?
We do not supply bamboo, but a frame is easy to put together. We recommend Australian customers buy four bamboo poles from Bamboo Australia for around $25 excluding delivery (bambooaustralia.com.au, phone 07 5447 0299); a set of cured poles weighs only about 4 kilograms. Cut or order them to these guide dimensions so they overlap and cross attractively — Single: 2 @ 230cm and 2 @ 140cm · Double: 2 @ 230cm and 2 @ 180cm · Queen: 2 @ 240cm and 2 @ 200cm · King: 2 @ 250cm and 2 @ 230cm · Super King: 2 @ 260cm and 2 @ 240cm. A pole diameter of 3 to 5cm (1 to 2 inches) works best.

What is the hidden frame, and what size do I cut it?
Box mosquito nets have a sleeve across the ceiling that accepts 19mm (¾ inch) powder-coated conduit — more commonly known as curtain rod — with corner brackets, to create a frame hidden inside the canopy ceiling. Curtain rod is available at most curtain outlets; cut it to these dimensions — Single: 2 @ 206cm and 2 @ 106cm · Double: 2 @ 206cm and 2 @ 144cm · Queen: 2 @ 212cm and 2 @ 164cm · King: 2 @ 220cm and 2 @ 190cm · Super King: 2 @ 223cm and 2 @ 205cm. You will also need four right-angled adjustable fittings that slide into the ends of the rod to form a rectangle. Four lengths of rod weigh about 2 kilograms.

Round, temple and freestanding nets
Do your round nets come in all sizes, and in polyester?
Yes. Our round cotton mosquito nets are available in King, Queen and Single sizes, and our multi-size designs mean one net covers Queen, King and daybed, and another covers Single and Double. In polyester you can choose a Classic Queen/King, a Classic Single/Double, or the Polyester Temple net.
Do the round nets come with a frame?
Yes — all our round mosquito nets are supplied with a frame and only need a single hook in the ceiling.
Does the Temple canopy fit a queen bed?
Yes. The Temple fits over all beds, from cots to kings. It is supplied with a foldable modular PVC frame that slides into a sleeve on the ceiling of the canopy, and it has three openings.
What is the difference between your pop-up and deluxe freestanding nets?
Both are self-supporting and need no ceiling hooks or fixings. The compact travel pop-up weighs about a kilogram, sets up in seconds and packs down small enough to go straight into your luggage — ideal for backpacking and short stays. The deluxe Freestanding net (Double, Queen and King sizes) is built for longer stays or rooms where you can't fix to the ceiling; it packs down to about 74cm x 74cm, so it travels as its own item rather than inside a bag, and that size is what lets it cover a full-size bed without any installation.
