Decorative first — and functional too

Silk is dual-purpose. First and foremost it's a decorative centrepiece: the georgette drapes are gossamer thin and shimmer and move in the slightest breeze, transforming a bed into the focal point of the room. But it isn't decoration only — when a silk canopy is properly sized, hung and sealed so the drapes fall closed around the bed, it will also exclude insects. Georgette is a looser weave than our cotton or polyester netting, so airflow is reduced; leaving the drapes tied open in warmer weather overcomes this.

Silk Bed Canopy FAQ

Is a silk bed canopy just decorative, or does it also protect against insects?

Both. A silk canopy is designed first as a decorative bedroom furnishing — that's its main purpose, and where its beauty lies. But it's genuinely dual-purpose: when it's correctly sized for your bed, hung properly and sealed so the drapes fall closed with no gaps, it will also exclude insects. The trade-off is airflow, because the georgette weave is looser than a true insect netting, so many customers leave the drapes tied open on warm nights and treat the insect protection as a welcome extra rather than the main reason to choose silk.

What is momme, and what momme silk do you use?

Momme (mm) is the traditional unit for silk weight and density — the higher the number, the heavier and more substantial the silk. Our drapes are 8 momme silk georgette, a light, flowing weight chosen so the curtains move and shimmer in the breeze rather than hanging stiff. The hems and trims — the parts that get handled and see the most wear — are finished in a heavier 16 momme silk charmeuse for extra strength and body.

How do I clean and care for a silk bed canopy?

Silk is not machine washable. Hand wash it gently in cold water, or have it dry cleaned — dry cleaning is the safer option for a large canopy. Keep it out of direct harsh sunlight when possible, as prolonged sun exposure can weaken and fade silk fibres over time, and store it somewhere dry and well ventilated if it's ever taken down.

Is your silk genuine, and where does it come from?

Yes — genuine pure mulberry silk, the same natural fibre used in fine silk garments and furnishings. Our silk canopies are exclusive to our company and have been part of our range for over twenty years. We don't use the word 'organic' to describe it, as that's a specific certified claim we can't substantiate — what we can tell you plainly is that it's real, pure silk, not a synthetic imitation.

What sizes and shapes does the silk range come in?

Our silk canopies come in two shapes. The box style creates a structured four-poster canopy effect with four openings, available in Queen and King. The round Classic style hangs from a single ceiling point for a romantic princess-canopy look, and our King/Queen design is over 280cm high, generously sized to make a real statement over the bed.

Why is silk so much more expensive than cotton or polyester?

Pure mulberry silk is one of the most expensive natural fibres in the world, and ours is exclusive to our company rather than mass-produced. You're paying for a luxury natural fibre, a fine weight and weave chosen specifically for drape and shimmer, and a canopy designed as a genuine bedroom furnishing rather than a mosquito net that happens to look nice. It's the choice for a special room, not an everyday budget option.

Is silk a good everyday choice for insect protection, or is it better suited to a special room?

It's best suited to a special room. Silk is our decorative showpiece first, and while it will exclude insects when properly sized, hung and sealed, the reduced airflow from the looser georgette weave and the delicate hand-wash-only care mean it isn't the practical, everyday choice the way cotton or polyester is. Choose silk for a master suite, guest room or four-poster bed you want to make the centrepiece of the room; choose cotton or polyester for the bed you want fuss-free, year-round protection on.

Can I leave the silk drapes tied open, and does that affect the insect protection?

Yes, and many customers do exactly that in warmer weather to maximise airflow. If the drapes are tied open, the canopy is functioning purely as a decorative furnishing rather than a sealed barrier — for the insect-protection function you need the drapes let down and closed around the bed. Most silk customers use it as decoration night to night and only close it fully when they want the extra protection.
