Description

Polyester Mosquito Netting by the Metre

Sheer white polyester mosquito netting sold by the metre, cut from the same roll we use to make our own polyester nets. It is 190cm wide — wide enough to run a full drop down the side of most beds without joining — and fine enough at 360 holes per square inch to exclude mosquitoes.

This is the netting to buy if you are making something yourself: a canopy for an awkward bed, a window or door screen, a cover for a pram or a plant, or a repair to a net you already own. It is soft, it drapes well, it does not shrink, and it is completely free of insecticide or chemical treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the netting sold and what is the minimum order?

It is sold by the metre as a single continuous cut length, in 5, 10, 20 and 50 metre lengths. The minimum order is 5 metres. Longer runs come as one piece rather than several joined lengths, so you can cut it to suit your own project.

How wide is the netting?

190cm. That is wide enough to make a full-length drop for most beds and windows without having to join two pieces together, which is usually the thing that makes a home-made net look home-made.

Will this netting keep mosquitoes out?

Yes. At 360 holes per square inch the mesh is fine enough to exclude mosquitoes, and it is the same netting we use in our own polyester mosquito nets. Bear in mind that netting only protects you when it is properly sized, hung and sealed — a gap at the floor or a join that has not been closed will let insects through no matter how fine the mesh is.

Does polyester netting shrink when washed?

No. Polyester does not shrink, so what you order is what you keep. This makes it the easier of our two nettings to work with if you are cutting to a measured size, because you do not have to build in an allowance.

What colour is it?

Natural white only. We do not dye our polyester netting, so white is the only colour it is available in.

Is the netting treated with insecticide?

No. It is completely chemical-free, with no permethrin, insecticide or repellent finish. It works purely as a physical barrier, which makes it safe to use around children, cots and pets.

Is it easy to sew?

Yes. It is a knitted mesh, so it will not fray at a raw cut edge and does not have to be hemmed unless you want the neater finish. A standard sewing machine with a fine needle and a longer stitch length handles it without trouble. Do not pull the fabric through the machine, as the mesh will stretch.

What do people use it for?

Most commonly for making a canopy for a bed we do not have a standard net for, screening a window or doorway, covering a pram or a cot, protecting seedlings and fruit trees, and repairing or extending an existing net.

Can I use it outdoors?

It can be used outdoors for short periods, for example over plants or on a verandah, but polyester netting is not made as an exterior product and prolonged sun exposure will weaken it over time. Our nets are designed for indoor use.

Should I choose polyester or cotton netting?

Choose polyester if you want the finer mesh, a sheer see-through look, no shrinkage, and the lower price. Choose our cotton netting if you want a natural fibre, a softer heavier drape, and a fabric that is stronger and repairable. Both exclude mosquitoes.
