Cotton Mosquito Netting by the Metre

Natural cotton mosquito netting sold by the metre, 165cm wide, cut from the same roll we use for our own cotton nets. It has a run-proof weave that gives it a faintly chequered look, and that weave is what makes it hold together: a snag stays a snag instead of running away into a ladder.

This is real netting, not muslin. It is considerably stronger than the cotton muslin usually sold as mosquito netting, while still hanging soft and full. Natural white, breathable, and free of any chemical treatment.

Care

Cold water machine wash on a delicate cycle, cold hand wash, or dry clean. Line dry. Do not tumble dry. Warm iron if desired. Allow around 5% shrinkage in cold water and over 10% in warm to hot water. Pull the netting gently back into shape while damp.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the cotton netting sold and what is the minimum order?

It is sold by the metre as a single continuous cut length, in 5, 10, 20 and 50 metre lengths, with a minimum order of 5 metres. Longer lengths are supplied as one piece so you can cut it to your own measurements.

How wide is it?

165cm. Cotton netting is woven narrower than our polyester, so if you are planning a large canopy it is worth measuring your drop before ordering to work out whether you will need to join two widths.

What is a run-proof weave and why does the netting look chequered?

The threads are woven in a way that locks each intersection in place, so if a thread is snagged or cut the damage stays where it is instead of running into a ladder. The faint chequered pattern you can see is simply what that weave looks like up close. It is not a print or a dye.

Is this the same as cotton muslin?

No, and the difference matters. Much of what is sold as cotton mosquito netting is muslin, which is a plain lightweight cloth that tears easily and blocks airflow. This is a proper open netting with a run-proof weave — considerably stronger, far more breathable, and it drapes rather than hanging limp.

Does cotton netting shrink?

Yes. Allow for around 5% shrinkage if you wash it in cold water, and over 10% in warm to hot water. Always add a shrinkage allowance to your measurements before cutting, and always wash cold.

How do I wash it and keep it in shape?

Cold water machine wash on a delicate cycle, cold hand wash, or dry clean. Line dry, never tumble dry, and warm iron if you want to. Cotton is a natural fibre and the netting will move a little in the wash — pull and stretch it gently back into shape while it is still damp and it will settle.

What colour is it?

Natural white. Cotton takes dye readily, so if you want a colour the netting can be dyed at home with a standard cotton dye, remembering that it will shrink in the process if the water is warm.

Will cotton netting keep out midges and sandflies?

Our experience over more than thirty years, and the feedback we get from customers in sandfly country, is that people sleeping under cotton netting report far fewer bites from midges and sandflies than they expect from the mesh size alone. We offer that as our experience rather than as an established fact. What we can say plainly is that the mesh is 256 holes per square inch and excludes mosquitoes when the netting is properly sized, hung and sealed.

Can I use it to repair or extend one of your cotton nets?

Yes. It is the same netting we make our cotton nets from, so a patch or an added panel will match in weave, weight and colour. Wash the new netting before you join it to an older net, so both pieces have already shrunk by the same amount.

Should I choose cotton or polyester netting?

Choose cotton if you want a natural breathable fibre, a heavier and softer drape, a fabric that can be dyed and repaired, and the run-proof weave. Choose our polyester netting if you want a finer mesh, a sheer see-through look, no shrinkage and a lower price.
